Although public baths known as places for socialization, business and washing date back to Greek and Roman times, the hamam only gained its name and glory during the Ottoman Empire when it began to proliferate. Hamam Omerye is a historical jewel in the heart of the happening and artistic old town of Lefkosia (Nicosia), next to many historical sites such as the Omeriye Mosque and the Archbishop’s Palace. In 1570-71, after the island fell to the Ottomans, Hamam Omerye was built as a donation to the city by Lala Mustafa Pasha. Named after Caliph Omar, the hamam became known as Omerye and in 2005 received the Europa Nostra prize for the Conservation of Architectural Heritage.

Historically the hamam or Turkish bath, stood for far more than getting a leisurely bath or cleansing. It was a rite and a ritual in which the elements were harnessed for the cleansing and purification of the body and soul, intimately bound to everyday life. Throughout time, hamam baths were often described as “silent healers”. Hippocrates even believed that exposure to these hot and humid conditions offer the best protection for our health. He believed that this “artificial fever” promotes faster blood circulation, creates antibodies and boosts the immune system. Nowadays, the numerous hamam bath benefits are well recognized. Hyperthermia or overheating, enhances the detoxification process while steam elevates the body's temperature speeding up metabolism and blood flow.

The thermal contrast resulting from the use of cold water after the hot steam is extremely invigorating and boosts cardiovascular activity. In turn, this increased metabolism and blood flow stimulates muscles, getting them to release stored toxins. Today, at Hamam Omerye, you can try the authentic yet luscious hamam experience that makes our daily bath or shower routine seem like such a trivial and insignificant affair in comparison!
